Chip flaw could lead to class action suit vs Intel

Krzanich showed off another new chip during his keynote, and it's a doozy: A 49-qubit chip for quantum computing. Intel and several other chipmakers have admitted to the mistakes they made in their chips. While Intel claims that the stock sale was part of a planned divestiture, Krzanich put the plan in place only in October.

A little closer to the computers of today is another new processor: Loihi, an AI test chip.

Krzanich took time to tout the company's 49-qubit chip, which he described as a "major breakthrough" for quantum computing, before touting the changes in transport Intel is helping to bring about. Krzanich did not address the company's plans for older chips.

In the China market, Krzanich disclosed two critical partnerships with leading automotive manufacturer SAIC Motor and digital mapping company NavInfo. It's a symbol of what's possible, Krzanich said, as Intel seeks to remake itself.

It quoted Ben Silverman, a researcher at InsiderScore, as saying that Krzanich's trade was noticeable because it differed from his previous sales; in those cases, he had exercised options or sold shares monthly or quarterly, with less than 80,000 shares being involved at any one time. That was an unusual move by a CEO, Mr. Silverman said.

Was Krzanich Aware of the Security Flaw?

The SEC and Justice Department declined to comment.

He proceeded to talk about Trump's ability to tap into a phenomenon that was overlooked by the political establishment, who he referred to as "so-called" geniuses.

That might be reasonable, said Doug Chia, who oversees governance issues at the Conference Board, a nonprofit business advisory group.

Intel's chief executive has said software fixes to address the recently discovered Meltdown and Spectre bugs in microchips would be released in the next few days.

"This is exactly the type of report of suspicious trading that the SEC routinely investigates as well as the DOJ", said Brandon L. Garrett, a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law. Of course, this problem isn't unique to Intel, with major companies like Google and Apple also falling within the purview of the attacks but it was Intel's initial response which seemed to disappoint many.

Even so, other securities specialists say companies generally would want to be careful in communicating with investors about a CEO's stock sale in such circumstances.

But before he could jump into his almost two-hour speech about the futuristic world where one could hail helicopters or watch entertainment from the point of view of a favorite actor or athlete, Krzanich had to address the month's big tech news about his chips' security vulnerability.

The Ferrari Challenge broadcast will use the processing power of Intel Xeon Scalable processors and the neonTM framework for deep learning not only to transcode, identify objects and events, and stream the experience to viewers online, but also to mine the resulting data for further insights for drivers and fans. Intel's neuromorphic research prototype chip ("Loihi") is now fully functioning and will be shared with research partners this year.
