CES 2018: Why China's Huawei Won't Be Signing a Deal with AT&T

No further explanation was given by Huawei regarding the role, but media outlets like CNET suggested that Gadot was basically appointed as the firm's brand ambassador for the United States market.

One of the world's biggest smartphone makers, Huawei had hoped to finally crack the U.S. market with the launch of the new Mate 10 Pro.

Huawei smartphones are already available in the USA, but only through some electronics stores and online platforms, including its own US website, plus Amazon.com and Best Buy. But according to The Wall Street Journal, the carrier backed out of the deal without any explanation.

In December 2017, Huawei consumer business head Richard Yu told Associated Press that the company will start selling the Huawei Mate 10 Pro through us carriers next year and will reveal details about the same at CES 2018. It should be noted that the letter the news outlet reviewed didn't specifically mention AT&T, but reports of the two companies inking an agreement have been widespread long before this development. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has also been voted as phone of the year by Android 2017.

AT&T's cancellation comes weeks after the US Senate and House intelligence committees reportedly sent letters to the Federal Communications Commission arguing that Huawei was a security threat.

It's awkward timing for Huawei, which showed off the Mate 10 Pro at the tech show CES this week.

In a speech given by the CEO of Huawei's consumer products division, Richard Yu, during the CES 2018, the executive went "off-script" to address the issue.

"The U.S. market presents unique challenges for Huawei, and while the HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro will not be sold by U.S. carriers, we remain committed to this market now and in the future", it said.

The firm will launch the latest model from its high-end Mate series in the US on February 18 for a starting price of $799, with orders accepted as of February 4, it announced this week.

The refusal is the latest example of a Chinese company struggling to develop its United States business.

A representative of Huawei said on Thursday that they believe the move to protect their intellectual property rights can help promote the healthy and sustained development of the science and technology industry. Huawei's potential deal with AT&T was canceled due to security concerns.
