Cancer Related Deaths Down in US

Cancer mortality in the USA, in terms of deaths per 100,000 population after adjustment for age, fell 1.7% from 2014 to 2015, according to a statistical report from the American Cancer Society.

"This new report reiterates where cancer control efforts have worked, particularly the impact of tobacco control", Dr. Otis Brawley, the American Cancer Society's chief medical officer, said in a news release. The decline began in 1991 and researchers say since then the death rate has dropped 26 percent. In Delaware, for example, paying for screenings and treatment for the uninsured helped to drastically reduce colorectal cancer mortality rates and shrink the gap between blacks and whites. Prostate cancer alone accounts for one in five diagnoses.

Overall, the USA cancer death rate reached a peak of 215.1 per 100,000 population in 1991, and has declined to 158.6 per 100,000 in 2015.

Lung cancer incidence rates continued to decline about twice as fast in men as in women, reflecting differences in tobacco use and more smoking among females in some populations.

Some states in the report, such as NY and MA, have seen the racial mortality gap disappear for whites and blacks over 65.

But it killed 45 percent fewer men between 1990 and 2015, and 19 percent fewer women between 2002 and 2015.

For women, breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed form, accounting for 30 percent of all new cancer cases.

The full study is available through the CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

The recent numbers continue a decreasing trend dating back to the early 90's.

"Strikingly though, tobacco remains by far the leading cause of cancer deaths today, responsible for almost three in ten cancer deaths", Brawley noted.

The report forecasts about 1.7 million new cancer cases and 609,640 cancer deaths in the United States in 2018.

"If we, the cancer community, could do a better job of implementing those things we already know work", Bennett said, "many, many lives could be saved".
