California suspect in fatal hoax 911 call sent to Kansas

On January 9, arrest warrants were issued for 25-year-old Tyler Barriss of Los Angeles, California who had previously been charged in connection with a suspected swatting incident on December 28 where a member of the Wichita Police Department fatally shot an innocent man. Police believe Barriss was responsible for making a hoax emergency call to Wichita, Kansas' 911 dispatch, and reporting a fake homicide and hostage situation.

Interestingly, Barriss is also wanted in Canada: The Globe and Mail reports that he is facing mischief and fraud charges in Calgary, Alberta, arising from an attempted swatting on December 22. Just a month later, Barriss went on to violate a protective order that resulted in him receiving a year-long prison sentence, but he was eventually released early in August 2017 after that. His bond was set at $500,000.

More information on the charges can be found on the official Wichita Eagle website.

The false call made by Barriss is believed to have been the result of an online dispute between two Call of Duty players.

AFC Wildcard Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars: Preview and Prediction
Jacksonville's latest defensive gem - a 10-3 victory against Buffalo (9-8) on Sunday - set up a rematch with the Steelers (13-3). Jacksonville players standing on the sideline pointed to Clay's feet, and coach Doug Marrone threw the challenge flag.

Barriss is accused of making a false report that led to the fatal shooting of Andrew Finch. That officer is now on paid administrative leave.

Barriss had a reputation for helping people gain revenge against online enemies and gaming opponents through swatting - placing a hoax phone call about a unsafe situation in order to trigger a massive police response at an address to frighten its occupants.

Neither Barriss nor Finch was involved in the disputed game, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Several players later took to Twitter claiming that one gamer had made the call, but rather than giving his own address, he gave what he thought was the address of the other player with whom he had been arguing. The Calgary resident said that she was targeted by Barriss due to her online persona.
