After HP, 'Padmaavat' now banned in Gujarat

Later, Madhya Pradesh too declined to allow the film's screening.

The fringe group has been protesting against the movie because of alleged distortions of history related to Rani Padmini of Chittor, even as Sanjay Leela Bhansali has refused that the movie maligns the image of Padmini.

Things have been slowly starting to work in favor of Deepika Padukone starrer Padmavati, with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) finally according it a U/A rating.

The film was first banned by the Vasundhara Raje government in Rajasthan. This, of course, didn't go down well with the Rajputs and Karni Sena, who started vandalising properties, protesting, threatening to burn theatres and doing everything to ban the film.

Stating that while the name of the film was changed, the story and scenes were not, Mr Athawale demanded that such scenes be deleted before the film was released. A member of Karni Sena, Jeevan Singh said, "We will not let the film release in the country under any circumstances".

The reason for the ban in these BJP-ruled states is yet to be known.

The FIR was filed with Didwana police in March, 2017, in which complainants Virendra Singh and Nagpal Singh sought action against Bhansali and two of the lead actors in the film, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

So, as of now, three states are against the film. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, on Friday, said that Padmaavat will not release in Gujarat. In a cryptic reply, he implied, "Jo kaha tha, woh hoga (What I said, will happen)".

Recently, the chief minister had said that he respects art but one should avoid hurting anyone's sentiments. "Now, his statement that he will abide by his commitment clearly indicates that ban on the movie will continue until there is a specific decision taken by the Centre or judiciary".
