Accused Manhattan bomber indicted for NYC subway attack

Akayed Ullah, a Bangladeshi immigrant, said little during his first appearance in federal court in Manhattan.

A Bangladeshi immigrant was indicted Wednesday in the failed pipe bombing of the NY subway system last month.

A grand jury indicted Akayed Ullah, who was accused of trying to blow up a suicide bomb in New York City in December, on terrorism charges, Wednesday.

The indictment was announced by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY.

Akayed, who was wearing blue jail-issued clothing, said he understood the terrorism charges against him.

Gallicchio did not respond to questions about Ullah's odd plea, which seemed to leave the door open for a plea agreement at a later date.

The bearded Ullah was the only person seriously hurt when the bomb went off December 11 in a corridor linking the subway to Manhattan's Port Authority bus terminal.

Germany coalition talks: Merkel aides see breakthrough
This after a political deadlock in the euro zone's largest economy that had shed some doubt on the future of Merkel's leadership. The result came after a more than 24-hour session, which capped a week of negotiations, AP reports.

Authorities said Ullah mentioned President Donald Trump in a Facebook post on the morning of the attack, which read, "Trump you failed to protect your nation".

Ullah, who immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh in 2011, appeared for a formal arraignment before U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan of the Southern District of NY wearing blue and gray jail scrubs, appearing to move gingerly as he took his seat between his attorneys, Amy Gallicchio and Julia Gatto of the Federal Defenders of NY. Ullah was injured, and three others were slightly hurt.

Ullah, 27, is from Bangladesh and was thought to be carrying out the attack in the name of the Islamic State, according to Reuters.

According to the documents, he also told investigators that he had been motivated by American air strikes on Islamic State targets.

The crude explosive device, strapped to his body, was fashioned from a pipe, a 9-volt battery and Christmas lights and was packed with metal screws. However, his wife did not join him in the US.

Trump has taken the attack to drum support for his immigration ban, which, the White House said, would have prevented the attacker from entering the US.
