Word of the Year 2017 - Feminism | Merriam-Webster

In a year that brought us a lot of buzzwords, dictionary Merriam-Webster has chosen "feminism" as its No. 1.

They both helped make "feminism" the world's most searched for word this year.

Use of the word spiked this year, due in part to events like the Women's March in Washington, D.C., and similar marches worldwide.

The word spiked again in late February, after White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told the Conservative Political Action Conference that it was hard for her to call herself a feminist "because it seems to be very anti-male and very pro-abortion in this context".

The official definition classifies the word as the "theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes" and "organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests". "Feminism" was the leader of the pack, with a 70 percent increase in lookups over 2016. In April, at a Women and Entrepreneurship panel in Berlin, first daughter Ivanka Trump said her father was an avid supporter of women.

Speaking at a conservative event, she said she found it hard for describe herself as a feminist because she was not "anti-male" and "pro-abortion".

The Wall Street Journal's conservative editorial page has knives out for former top Trump political strategist Steve Bannon . The site on Wednesday published a list of the "Five Things That Went Wrong for Roy Moore ".

"The word was in the air", said Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster's editor-at-large.

She said she was a "product of my choices, not a victim of my circumstances", which she described as "conservative feminism".

Searches rose following the Women's March on Washington and other U.S. cities on January 21, the day after Trump was sworn in as president, the dictionary said Tuesday.

Other words that made the top ten include "recuse", largely relating to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Russian Federation investigation; "empathy;" "dotard", which North Korean President Kim Jong Un used to describe Trump; and "syzygy", a word that spiked after the solar eclipse.

"The dictionary named the word "complicit" as the runner-up, and eight other terms to round out the top ten words of 2017, including "syzygy", federalism", and "gaffe".

The word refers to someone in "a state or period of senile decay marked by decline of mental poise and alertness".
