Wine glasses seven times larger now

Wine glasses seven times larger now

The growth of our glasses was gradual for nearly three centuries, then in the 1990s they suddenly ballooned, doubling from just over 200ml to around 450ml in two decades.

A typical wine glass 300 years ago would have held only about a half of today's smallest "official" measure of 125ml, the Guardian reported on Thursday.

Scientists have found that the capacity of wine glasses has ballooned almost seven-fold over the past 300 years, rising most sharply in the last two decades in line with a surge in wine consumption, a study has revealed. Researchers say this is the time wine glasses were starting to be tailored in both shape and size for different wines, as well as bars and restaurants which expected it would increase wine sales.

They also say some people get more pleasure drinking from a larger glass.

"As we approach the culturally legitimized deviancy of festive drinking", the researchers said in an article published Wednesday in the British Medical Journal, "we suggest that size does matter: Look at the wineglass in your hand".

Additionally, a different Cambridge study published past year found that increasing the size of wine glasses boosted sales, even when the portion size remained the same.

Wine sold in the United Kingdom has also increased since the 1990s, according to the study. "Since the 1990s, the size has increased rapidly".

It is unclear whether the size of glassware has had an impact on how much we drink, although there is some evidence to support this assumption.

Supreme Court to give interim order on Aadhaar related cases today
Senior advocate Arvind Datar argued that the circulars issued under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act have gone beyond mere subsidies. The Centre on Wednesday extended the deadline to link Aadhaar with bank accounts to March 31.

According to registered dietitian Tristaca Curley of Fueling with Food, drinking wine in excess has its health consequences.

The team used measurements of 411 glasses, sourced from museums, the Royal Household and shops, from 1700 to the present day, and found that there were a number of factors over the years - not just glassmaking techniques - that contributed to the increasing sizes in wine glasses.

"There may be some benefits from drinking in moderation, below this two to three drink maximum, such as reduced risk of heart disease, gallstones and Type 2 diabetes", she says.

But wine expert Gilbert Winfield said it is not what it seems.

But if you're filling your 450ml glasses all the way up to the rim then the chief medical officer recommends you drink just drink just two of those a week to avoid developing health problems.

Cersei Lannister must have missed the memo that her wine goblet should've been much smaller. This is, the researchers said, perhaps a reason why people overdrink.

And put your glass down between sips.
