US Assured Pakistan Of 'No Indian Military Role In Afghanistan'

US DEFENCE secretary James Mattis visited Pakistan on Monday (4) but vowed to tread lightly and find "common ground" as Washington pressures its wayward ally to eliminate militant safe havens.

Lt Col Michael Andrews, a Pentagon spokesman, said payments to Pakistan from the fund are still frozen, and that "Secretary Mattis has not yet made a decision on the certification required" by Congress to release the $400 million in counter-terrorism funds for Pakistan in fiscal 2017.

A day after US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' meeting with Pakistan's officials in Islamabad, Foreign Minister, Khawaja Asif, said that Islamabad had been assured that there would be no military role for India in Afghanistan. The Afghan war was a liability for Pakistan.

Top military leadership met on Tuesday to discuss internal and regional security developments in a Corps Commanders Conference in Rawalpindi, chaired by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The fact that three separate press statements were issued after the meetings speaks volumes about disagreements among the parties, said a source.

The Pakistani officials have offered condition support to help end the cross-border attacks in Afghanistan by the militants using the Pakistani territory. Firstly, the USA has been asked to force the Afghan government to fence the Pak-Afghan border following a similar Pakistani initiative on its side.

In a televised speech, Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi called on Yemenis to rise up against the Iran-aligned Houthis. The government also reached out to Saleh's supporters with an offer of amnesty.

Mattis told Pakistani officials that the U.S. was ready to play its role in addressing Pakistan's reservations.

The visit, Mattis's first as defence secretary, came days after the United States voiced concerns following a Pakistani court's decision to free one of the alleged masterminds of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and as the U.S. pushes its longtime ally to do more to combat insurgents who allegedly use bases in Pakistan's tribal belt to target North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops in Afghanistan.

Earlier, while talking to The News, a State Department spokesperson said that the U.S. had made clear its expectation for decisive action against terrorist and militant groups that operate from Pakistani soil.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has flatly rejected the USA demand for joint operations against militants on the former's soil in the latest round of "inconclusive" talks between the two countries held this week, diplomatic sources told The News.
