Turkey wants basketball star jailed for insulting Erdoğan

Kanter, who grew up in Turkey, is a vocal supporter of Fethullah Gülen, the USA -based cleric blamed by Ankara for last year's failed military coup.

It was reported early yesterday that Kanter was wanted by Turkish prosecutors after Enes repeatedly insulted Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which is a criminal offense to do so.

Enes Kanter, who is of Turkish descent, apparently criticized the foreign despot on social media.

Fethullah Gulen, the US -based preacher, is accused by Ankara of orchestrating a failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016. He said he was finally able to return to the United States after American officials intervened, adding that there was a warrant out for his arrest.

In a viral video, which he shot at the airport, Kanter famously referred to Erdogan as "the Hitler of our century". "I am open to adoption definitely". I have a green card. It would definitely be nice.

Turkey has stood firm with the state of Qatar that in June came under diplomatic and commercial isolation by Saudi and UAE-led Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries over the Doha government's protection of Muslim Brotherhood figures and alleged cooperation with Iran. The rest of Kanter's family remains in Turkey.

The investigation could eventually be referred to state and/or federal prosecutors, according to numerous sources. He returned to the Senate in 2010 after an earlier stint that ended because of term limits.

Kanter would be tried in absentia due to the fact that he is in the United States.

"I was like, 'That's it?" Journalists, innocent people in jail getting tortured and killed and kidnapped.

"Four years? That's it?" "(If) we made the playoffs, it will drive him insane".

"You guys were seeing today that I was just out there having fun, playing basketball and practicing with my teammates", Kanter said. That stuff (the threats) really don't bother me because I'm used to it.

"If we make playoffs, then that will drive him insane, so that's what I'm really focused on right now, just make the playoffs and drive this dude insane", he said.
