Saudi anti-corruption drive: Detainees offered pardon

Saudi Arabia's public prosecutor said on December 5 that the bank accounts of 376 people detained in a sweeping anti-corruption campaign launched last month and others related remain frozen, down from over 2,000 a few weeks ago, while most of the detainees have agreed to settlements to avoid prosecution.

The public prosecutor said the anti-corruption committee headed by 32-year-old Prince Mohammed, the king's favoured son also known as MbS, was expected to finish the settlement phase within a few weeks.

Numerous princes and former ministers have been detained as part of the anti-corruption drive, with many being held at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Riyadh.

Prominent figures, including princes, ministers and businessmen, were taken into custody last month.

Saudi Arabia's attorney general has released a statement on his committee's finding regarding a recent probe into corruption in the kingdom. The first phase, he explained, applies to those who admit to the allegations "freely and without coercion" and is based on the Royal Order's stipulation that the committee "has the right to decide what it deems as achieving public interest, especially with those who responded positively to the Committee".

In the healthy volunteers, the reduction in arterial stiffness resulting from the walk in Hyde Park persisted for up to 26 hours. They also suggest older adults walk in green spaces that are away from polluted or high-traffic areas.

The prince hopes to recover much of the US$100bn that the attorney general said was "misused through systematic corruption and embezzlement over several decades". But any detainees who deny the allegations, or with whom a settlement can not be reached, are referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office, which will continue to investigate and present its findings to the suspect, in accordance with the Law of Criminal Procedures.

It should be noted that all detainees are free to communicate with whoever they wish at this stage, that they are not being coerced in anyway, and have the right to reject the settlement at any time before signing. They can be held for up to six months with the possibility of court-ordered extension.

The attorney general also emphasised that the investigations will not affect businesses owned by the detained individuals. If there is not, the individual is released.

According to the statement, the total number of those who have been detained and whose accounts have been frozen stands at 376.
