Samsung Starts Producing First 512GB eUFS Storage Chips for Mobile Devices

Samsung is utilizing their own 64-layer 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND chips for these, which will give you speedy copy and write speeds even at this size.

There are a number of reasons why Samsung would want to rush to bake the 500GB+ non-removable chip into the Galaxy S9.

In the end, this new storage solution helps Samsung to keep its comfortable lead in the flash memory market, but this does not mean we are going to see flagships with 512 GB of internal storage space anytime soon.

"The new Samsung 512GB eUFS provides the best embedded storage solution for next-generation premium smartphones by overcoming potential limitations in system performance that can occur with the use of micro SD cards", said Jaesoo Han, executive vice president of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung also injected its 512GB eUFS solution with a new of proprietary technologies, including an advanced circuit design and new power management technology in the controller to minimize energy consumption. Although only claims for the moment, Samsung said it will be able to store 130 10 minute 4K Ultra HD video clips, ten times as many as a 64 GB eUFS. Therefore, it doubles the density of Samsung's previous 48-layer V-NAND-based 256GB eUFS, and Samsung notes that it does so in the same amount of space as the 256GB package.

The Samsung 512GB eUFS also features strong read and write performance. To put that in a real-life scenario, a user would be able to transfer a 5GB 1080p full HD video clip in around 6 seconds.

While most people use external storage such as SIM cards, internal storage offers faster performance.

It's possible Samsung includes these new chips in its next-gen smartphones, including the still-unannounced Galaxy S9 or Galaxy Note 9, both expected to launch sometime next year.

Samsung didn't say which of its upcoming new phones will get the 512GB eUFS first. With the 512GB eUFS, sequential read and writes reach up to 860 MB/s and 255 MB/s, respectively- over eight times faster than a typical microSD card. Samsung did mention on its press release that the 512GB eUFS will be used for its "upcoming flagship smartphones and tablets".
