Pop star Lorde considering cancelling Israel gigs after Twitter backlash

Last night, Lorde replied to fans on Twitter, revealing that she had been consulting with "many people" about the topic, and is "considering all options", adding: "Thank u for educating me i am learning all the time too".

Lorde has canceled an upcoming tour date in Tel Aviv amid pressures from a movement calling for a boycott of Israel.

Jewish New Zealander Justine Sachs and Palestinian New Zealander Nadia Abu-Shanab argued in their letter that "playing in Tel Aviv will be seen as giving support to the policies of the Israeli government, even if you make no comment on the political situation".

Lorde has canceled her June 5 appearance at the Tel Aviv Convention Center following backlash from activist groups who say artists should boycott the country because of human rights violtations.

In response to a letter urging her to reconsider her decision to put on a concert in Israel, the singer tweeted: "Noted!"

"As part of this struggle, we believe that an economic, intellectual and artistic boycott is an effective way of speaking out against these crimes".

Another resident said, "I have a list my mother gave me, she forgot to get some things yesterday, sugar and cinnamon rolls". They figured that people were out looking for last-minute stocking stuffers and items they may have forgotten.

In the letter, the two women said they worked together with others for "peace and justice in the Middle East and an end to Israeli apartheid".

The UN general assembly voted to denounce Donald Trump's move on Thursday. Elvis Costello pulled out of two gigs in 2010 over the treatment of Palestinians. Calls to boycott Israel are being led by members of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which has been backed by rockers including Roger Waters and Brian Eno.

While calls for boycotts are frequent, scores of acts still play Tel Aviv, including just in recent months artists like Radiohead, Cliff Richard, Future, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Take That and Bryan Adams.

The promoter said Lorde would announce it to her fans on Twitter soon.

Lorde, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, was named as one of TIME's "16 most influential teens of 2013", having become an worldwide music success by the time she was 17 years old.
