Myanmar says 2 Reuters journalists arrested over documents

Two Reuters journalists were arrested on Tuesday evening in Myanmar's main city, Yangon, a government spokesman said.

"For a democracy to succeed, journalists need to be able to do their jobs freely", said the embassy's statement.

"We are outraged by this blatant attack on press freedom", Adler said in a statement.

"We are urgently seeking more information about the circumstances of their arrest and their current situation", Abbe Serphos, global communications chief for Reuters, said of the reporters.

The ministry's statement said reporters Wa Lone, 31, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 27, were charged under the Official Secrets Act for allegedly attempting "to send important security documents regarding security forces in Rakhine State to foreign agencies overseas". He reported on the August 25 attacks in northern Rakhine that sparked much of the flight of the Rohingya Muslims and has reported in the central part of the state as well, where local Buddhists have begun segregating Rohingua Muslims and Rakhine communities.

Press advocates and human rights activists expressed concern that the arrests were part of a growing crackdown on press freedom in recent months. Kyaw Soe Oo joined the media outlet in September.

Law enforcement officials say he was inspired by the Islamic State, but apparently had no direct contact with the terror group. President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted.

Two Reuters journalists have been arrested for possessing "important security documents", Myanmar's Ministry of Information announced on Wednesday.

Burmese officials released a staged image of the two journalists wearing handcuffs with documents displayed before them.

The Official Secrets Act was enacted by the colonial government of India in 1923. The military, which is charge of security in northern Rakhine, and the civilian government have barred most journalists and worldwide observers from independently traveling to the region.

The senior Southeast Asia representative of the Committee to Protect Journalists, Shawn Crispin, called on Burma's government to "immediately, unconditionally release" the reporters.

The court in Naypyidaw's Zabuthiri township also charged the two journalists under the country's Immigration Act for allegedly conducting illegal activities inside Myanmar - an offense punishable by six months to five years in jail.

In November, a judge sentenced two foreign journalists, their interpreter and their driver to two months in prison on charges of filming with a drone without official permission.
