Coming in second with 1.7 million retweets was President Barack Obama, who took three of the top 10 spots on the list.

The top four new U.S. political accounts were some of Trump's most forceful critics, led by @PreetBharara, the former federal prosecutor he fired. It was a year in which nearly every sector of society was mashed together or clashing on social media, with the "Tweeter in Chief", President Donald Trump, leading the way.

Mr Obama appeared twice more in the top-10 most shared tweets of the year.

The current United States president made neither the most-retweeted nor the most-shared lists this year.

The social media platform's most shared tweet of the year was from a 17-year-old Nevada resident who asked U.S. fast food chain Wendy's how many retweets he would need to get a year's worth of free chicken nuggets. Next came @SallyQYates, the former acting attorney-general who was also fired by Trump.

Of course, the political atmosphere in America, activism and hashtags ruled Twitter, with #Resist the most used.
