Grand Rapids chief: Handcuffing of girl was disturbing

The Grand Rapids Police Department said in a press conference that a recent incident in which officers pointed their guns at at 11-year-old girl was handled inappropriately.

The girl's mother, Whitney Hodges, told the station officers ordered her daughter to come down from the porch with her hands up.

Grand Rapids police detained the girl and two other women, including the girl's mother, as they exited the house.

The body cam footage of the arrest showed Honestie sitting in the back of the auto, screaming, "Please don't let them take me" as she banged at the window, according to the reports.

Police were looking for the girl's 40-year-old aunt, who was suspected of stabbing a relative nearby, but didn't find her at the home, WOOD-TV reports.

An internal investigation into the incident has been opened by the police department after a complaint was filed on behalf of Hodges, who told WNEM that she's now "afraid to open or go near my back door".

"The cops turned on their flashlights and had guns in their hands", said Honestie.

"The screams of the 11-year-old, they go to your heart", Rahinsky said. "I wanted to be a detective or police officer, but now I don't want anything to do with those kind of things", Honestie said.

The girl's mother can be heard screaming, "That's my child". The cops then handcuffed the girl, patted her down and put her in the back of a police vehicle, Hodges said. "That's someone who lives in Grand Rapids, that's somebody who should feel safe running to an officer".

Officers determined that the suspect had fled the scene, and their investigation led them to another house on the west-side of Grand Rapids.

Rahinksy said the three individuals detained by officers were to make sure they were not the suspect and that they weren't armed, but he said changes need to be made moving forward.

"You're fine, you're fine, you're all right", the officer is heard saying. "It's been a very, very long day, yet I have hope because I believe I sit amongst colleagues who recognize it is not a good place for us to be as a city".

Officers got permission to search the house and didn't locate the suspect. Jackson told 24 Hour News 8 after that meeting that the family was withholding judgment on the department's response to the bodycam video until the internal investigation is complete. "The females were subsequently released". "And when you're dealing with an 11-year-old, it's inappropriate. So, as an agency, we've got to have some tough conversations".

The 11-year-old said the incident has impacted her in other ways, too.
