Florida man, 20, responsible for Uber hack

The hacker who breached Uber Technologies Inc's data last year was a 20-year-old American man who wanted to help his mother pay the bills.

Uber on November 21 announced that personal data of more than 57 million users including 600,000 of its drivers in the US, had been stolen by a breach that took place in October of 2016, and that it paid the person who hacked it $100,000 to have that information destroyed. The company only came clean about the hack 13 months after it took place, as Uber's former chief of security paid the hacker $100,000 under the guise of a bug bounty to keep it under wraps.

Its CEO Marten Mickos refused to identify the individual that received the payout but did make it clear that it knows his identity since it requires someone to prove their identity by sending a government tax form before authorizing payment. The company didn't say how the hacker was paid, or who he was. For Uber, their bug bounty program is hosted by HackerOne.

The hacker wasn't a participant in the program, emailing Uber to demand money instead.

Disney deal for Fox assets may mean Robert Iger stays longer
There's also speculation that a Fox acquisition could help Disney with its CEO succession problem. Fox shares were up 0.57 per cent in late afternoon trading, while Disney was down 2.45 per cent.

Uber responded by paying him $4.5m and his lawyer $3m and then failed to disclose any of the details of the saga to the company suing it - Waymo - despite Waymo being explicitly named in the resignation letter. Sources familiar with the hack have told Reuters that the payment was made through a program created to reward bug hunters who report flaws.

As per the report, Uber also conducted a forensic analysis of hacker's machine to make sure that no traces of data were left behind. According to a statement from Florida attorney general Pam Bondi's office released late last week, 32,000 of the aforementioned drivers who were vulnerable to the data breach are based in Florida. He questioned why the affected individuals and regulators weren't made aware of the hack.

Dara Khosrowshahi, who replaced Mr Kalanick in August, made details of the leak public, adding: "none of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it". "We are changing the way we do business". It is unclear if he informed the legal department of the breach. According to three insiders, Clark worked directly for Sullivan but also reported to the legal and privacy team of the company.
