Beyoncé surprises Colin Kaepernick with Sports Illustrated's Muhammad Ali Legacy Award

Beyoncé had glowing words of praise for football player Colin Kaepernick during the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards on Tuesday.

While Daily Show host Trevor Noah was the one who introduced Kaepernick, it was JAY-Z's wife who handed him the prestigious trophy.

The mother-of-three said she was "proud and humbled" to present the award to Kaepernick for his courage to open "an important conversation about race in the country".

He spoke of having open communication and holding talks between differing religions "and also in civil society". The Pope has described Jerusalem as "a unique city, sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims".

The artist and activist honoured the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback with the award for using his platform to protest against police brutality and racial injustice, including the powerful, symbolic moment where he sparked the 'take a knee' movement by kneeling during the USA national anthem before games. Kaepernick refused to stand during the "Star-Spangled Banner" as a way to protest the unequal treatment of black Americans and other people of color in the United States, especially in regards to police brutality.

Many larger protests followed, with President Trump saying other players who did the same should be fired. In October, he filed a grievance against the NFL which alleges that he has not signed with a team due to collusion by the league's owners.

"I say this as a person who receives credit for using my platform to protest systemic oppression, racialized injustice and the dire consequences of anti-blackness in America", he said.

Kaepernick did not walk on the red carpet prior to the SI show, and he did not speak with reporters after the event. Be sure to ch-ch-check out Colin's FULL speech when the ceremony is televised on Friday night at 8 p.m. on the NBC Sports Network.
