Arkansas Targeting SMU Coach Chad Morris

Dating back to Les Miles when he was at LSU, Arkansas seemed to be the school used by a coach as leverage to get a raise and a longer contract from his current school.

Numerous media outlets, including USA TODAY and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, report SMU head football coach Chad Morris is being targeted to take the same position with the University of Arkansas.

Morris has coached SMU for three seasons. He has spent time at SMU, Clemson, Tulsa, and 16 years at the Texas high school level going 169-38.

The former Clemson offensive coordinator (2011-2014) has a 14-22 record at SMU in a complete rebuilding situation.

But he reinstated the police soon afterwards without making major reforms to address the graft issue. Since he took office, police have reported killing about 4,000 people in the crackdown.

Sources tell us to expect Morris to target Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables for his defensive coordinator spot on staff.

Memphis coach Mike Norvell, a UCA graduate, is known to have been under heavy Arkansas consideration. This season, Morris' third with the program, the Mustangs will play Louisiana Tech in the Frisco Bowl, the program's first bowl appearance since 2012. Not only will he have to re-trench the roster from the ground-and-pound scheme of Bret Bielema, he'll have to do so in an SEC West that's as competitive as ever.

The Mustangs are top 15 in the FBS in scoring offense (40.2 points per game), total offense (493.8 yards per game) and passing offense (308 yards per game) this year.

Arkansas fired five-year coach Bret Bielema on November 24 after the Razorbacks concluded a 4-8 overall/1-7 SEC season and only on Monday hired athletic director Hunter Yurachek of the University of Houston to replace Jeff Long, the Razorbacks' athletic director since 2008 but fired on November 15.
