Air pollution may cause permanent damage to your child's brain

Its report, "Danger in the air: How air pollution can affect brain development in young children", states that breathing in particulate air pollution can both undermine cognitive development and damage brain tissue.

Satellite imagery analysed by UNICEF indicates that 12.2 million of these children live in South Asia.

The pollution " will impact the learning of the children, their memories, their language skills and motor", said to AFP Nicholas Rees, author of the report.

The crisis saw large swathes of north India and parts of neighbouring Pakistan blanketed in acrid air - an annual phenomenon as cooler air traps particles near the ground, cause pollution levels to spike.

The asian continent, which regularly produces impressive images of the "smog" in New Delhi or Beijing, for a total of 16 of the 17 million children in the world under the age of one year who are exposed to critical levels of pollution -at least six times higher than the ceilings considered safe for the health.

Another 4.3 million babies in the East Asia and Pacific region live in areas with pollution levels at least six times higher than the worldwide recommendation.

The report highlighted links found between pollution and brain functions "including verbal and nonverbal IQ and memory, reduced test scores, grade point averages among school children, as well as other neurological behavioural problems".

Among them are Switzerland, Morocco, Turkey, Qatar, Thailand and Hong Kong. The blacklisted countries are accused of behaving like tax havens.

Lastly, be aware about the air pollution levels near your area.

"No child should have to breathe dangerously polluted air and no society can afford to ignore air pollution", said Lake.

Air pollutants inhaled during pregnancy can affect the developing brain of a foetus, with potential lifelong effects, says the report. "As yet, we know the minimum - but not the maximum - extent of the harm. But this growing body of research does provide an indication of the scale of harm", said the UNICEF.

"Protecting children from air pollution not only benefits children".

The report urges steps be taken to reduce the impact of air pollution on babies' growing brains.

Reducing children's exposure in the areas of high air pollution is also very important.
