United Nations chief warns millions could die if Yemen blockade is not lifted

Saudi led a military coalition of 10 countries and intervened in Yemen's civil war in March 2015 to back the internationally recognized government of exiled President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi against Iranian-allied Shiite Houthis, who stormed the capital Sanaa and controlled much of the country's north.

Noting the "extremely fragile" humanitarian situation in Yemen, the organizations called for the "immediate opening of all air and seaports to ensure food, fuel and medicines can enter the country". "What we need is a winding down of the blockade so that we can save the lives of those people", he said.

According to the United Nations, it is now Yemen's 20 million people need humanitarian assistance, of which seven million are on the verge of starvation. Food supplies are set to run out within six weeks, and vaccines will last one month. "Over 2.2 million children are malnourished, of those, 385,000 children suffer from severe malnutrition and require therapeutic treatment to stay alive", the statement said.

At least 50 people, including civilians, were killed and injured in fresh Saudi-led coalition airstrikes on a village in Yemen's northwest province of Hajjah on Tuesday, a provincial security official and medics said.

Republican tax bill would kill deductions for interest on student loans
Republicans have discussed repealing Obama's individual mandate in their tax legislation to raise more money to pay for tax cuts. Republicans view passing a tax bill this year as a political imperative that is necessary to prove their ability to govern.

Yemen is facing a mass starvation that will affect millions of lives unless the Saudi-led coalition ends its blockade and allows aid deliveries into the country, the United Nations aid chief has warned.

Recall, on 6 November, the command of the Arab coalition, said that closes all land, air and sea ports in Yemen after the missile launch in Riyadh by Yemeni Houthi rebels.

A Saudi-led offensive, which began in 2015, targeted pushing back Houthi advances but has been dogged by widespread allegations of worldwide law violations.

Since March 2015, nearly 5,300 civilians have been killed and close to 9,000 injured in Yemen's war; the United Nations has warned that "the actual numbers were likely to be far higher".
