Turkey-Russia relations almost back to normal: Vladimir Putin

Speaking after a closed meeting in Sochi, Putin said the Astana framework created necessary conditions for United Nations intervention to protect Syrian refugees and that Russian Federation would continue to work with Turkey to help resolve the crisis.

Special emphasis will be given to the latest developments in the Syrian cities of Idlib and Afrin, the Turkish president told reporters in Istanbul before his departure for Sochi.

"If a military solution [in Syria] is out of the question, then those who say this [Russia and the US] should pull their troops out ... and steps for a political solution should be taken", he said.

He wrote in a tweet that he was coming to Chandigarh to meet Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and he would be grateful if he could meet him too.

"We've discussed joint steps with Russian Federation", he said at Istanbul's airport before traveling to Sochi.

The two leaders mainly focused on economic relations between Turkey and Russian Federation, underlining the success of normalization process.

"Our bilateral relations and cooperation in resolving regional issues provide us with an opportunity to look toward the future together", Erdogan said. Before his trip to Russia, Erdogan said both Moscow, which backs President Bashar al-Assad, and Washington, which armed Syrian YPG Kurdish forces Ankara sees as allied to separatists fighting in southeastern Turkey, had set up bases. The YPG has said Washington has established seven military bases in areas of northern Syria.
