Tesla is 'hotbed for racist behavior,' lawsuit alleges

"Race harassment has continued at the Tesla Factory, and became more widespread, because despite their knowledge of the harassment, Defendants have done nothing that could be reasonably expected to stop it".

In March, Tesla employee DeWitt Lambert claimed the company did nothing about constant racial harassment and sexually explicit comments made towards him by other workers.

According to Reuters, Tesla is also facing lawsuits alleging discrimination against gay and older workers, which it denies.

The complaint, Vaughn v Tesla Inc in the Superior Court of California, alleges that Tesla workers, including supervisors, regularly used derogatory and discriminatory language against black workers.

Vaughn's legal action, filed in California state court in Oakland on November 13, is at least the third lawsuit filed this year by black workers alleging racial slurs were used against them and that the company ignored their complaints, Reuters reported.

The proposed class-action suit alleges a racist culture at Tesla, unsafe factory conditions, and failure on the part of the company, including CEO Elon Musk personally, to prevent or investigate race-based harassment and discrimination there.

Vaughn - who worked for the company from April 23 to Halloween - said supervisors routinely used the "N word" in front of black workers.

"Although Tesla stands out as a groundbreaking company at the forefront of the electric auto revolution, its standard operating procedure at the Tesla factory is pre-Civil Rights era race discrimination", Vaughn's complaint said.

Vaughn was sacked from the Fremont plant in late October with "not having a positive attitude" listed as the cause of termination.

This is also not the first time Elon Musk has come under fire from progressives this year.

The lawsuit is the latest in a growing number of lawsuits accusing Tesla of discrimination.

"Part of not being a huge jerk is considering how someone might feel who is part of a historically less represented group", Musk's email reads.

"In fairness, if someone is a jerk to you, but sincerely apologizes, it is important to be thick-skinned and accept that apology", Tesla's C.E.O wrote in an email. "Sometimes these things happen unintentionally, in which case you should apologise".

Owen Diaz and his son, Demetric, left to right, talk about their lawsuit against Tesla at their attorney's office in Oakland, California, on Thursday, 21 September, 2017.

Overloaded with such allegations and lawsuits, Tesla is prepping to launch its semi truck on Thursday of this week.
