Second US judge halts Trump ban on transgender troops

A federal court in Baltimore has agreed to the ACLU's request to completely halt implementation of Trump's directive banning transgender men and women from serving in the military as the ACLU's lawsuit challenging the ban moves forward.

In July, President Trump surprised military leaders and members of Congress when he announced the proposal in a series of tweets.

Garbis has ordered US military heads not to enforce policies and directives of Trump regarding military eligibility of transgender service members and related sex-reassignment medical procedures. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and can not be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. But Garbis and Kollar-Kotelly's rulings have now returned the situation to what it was before Trump's July tweets, with the policy returned, at least temporarily, to that set by the Obama administration past year, with current troops able to serve openly and receive all medically necessary care, and enlistment of new ones to begin July 1. The policy also banned the military from paying for gender-affirming surgery, with some exceptions to "protect the health" of someone who had already begun transitioning.

What have the courts said?

The preliminary injunction prohibits the president's policies until the lawsuit is resolved. The judge approved that motion, but denied a request to block the ban on government funds for gender reassignment surgery.

Sleeping on your back could double the risk of stillbirth
However, they can still reduce these chances if they sleep on their side during the third trimester. It looked into 291 pregnancies that ended in stillbirth and 735 women who had a live birth.

In October, however, a federal court partially blocked that directive, urging all branches of the military to ignore Trump's executive memorandum regarding transgender people and "revert to the status quo".

He gave the Pentagon until March 23, 2018 to craft a new policy on transgender service members. The judge changed the policy back to what it was before June 2016 while it was being reviewed.

In a 53-page administering, US District Court Judge Marvin Garbis in Maryland reasoned that transgender administration individuals are "as of now enduring hurtful outcomes", and went above and beyond than a prior decision by particularly forbidding the Trump organization from obstructing those testing the restriction from finishing their medicinally vital surgeries.

"Today is a victory for transgender service members across the country", said Joshua Block, senior staff attorney with the ACLU's LGBT & HIV Project, in a press release. He added, "We're pleased that the courts have stepped in to ensure that trans service members are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve".

Estimates vary widely about the number of transgender military members.
