Russian Federation reports radioactivity 986 times above normal after claims of nuclear accident

France's nuclear safety agency earlier this month said that it recorded radioactivity in the area between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains from a suspected accident involving nuclear fuel or the production of radioactive material.

The news appears to confirm European reports that the spikes across Europe came from a nuclear accident in Russian Federation, but the country is yet to confirm this.

Rosatom later said in response to the French agency's report that "radiation around all objects of Russian nuclear infrastructure are within the norm and are at the level of background radiation".

Agrayash weather station, located around 20 miles from a huge nuclear reprocessing plant known as Mayak, recorded pollution levels 986 times those of the previous month.

The Rosgidromet service said: 'Probes of radioactive aerosols from monitoring stations Argayash and Novogorny were found to contain radioisotope Ru-106 between September 25 and October 1'.

The Russian agency said that the ruthenium-106 has then been detected in Tatarstan and then in the south of Russia, before getting it fixed from the 29th of September " in all european countries, from Italy and north of Europe ".

"The concentration levels in the air ruthenium-106, which have been identified in Europe and especially in France are of no effect, both to human health and the environment", notes the IRSN.

British Gas scraps standard tariff for new customers

Argayash is close to the Mayak nuclear facility, infamous as the source of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history in 1957.

Ruthenium-106 is a fission product from the nuclear industry, also used for medical treatments.

Russia's meteorological service said on Tuesday it had measured pollution of a radioactive isotope at almost 1,000 times normal levels in the Ural mountains, the first official Russian data supporting reports that an accident had taken place. The isotope is not a naturally occurring one, however and the spike could not have occurred spontaneously.

A cloud of radioactive pollution over Europe had indicated that an accident had taken place at a nuclear facility either in Russian Federation or Kazakhstan in the last week of September.

Greenpeace Russia on Monday called on Rosatom to open "an in-depth inquiry and publish the results about the incidents at Mayak", according to The Guardian.

Environmental pressure group Greenpeace said it would petition the Russian Prosecutor General's office to investigate "a possible concealment of a radiation accident" and check whether public health was sufficiently protected.
