Results are in for eight models, all score five stars — Euro NCAP

In the "Child Occupant" protection test area, Euro NCAP rated the Polo with a figure of 85% - a new top figure in its segment. Each one passed with flying colours!

Other cars tested in this batch of Euro NCAP tests included the Citroen C3 Aircross, Vauxhall Crossland X, VW T-Roc, Skoda Karoq and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, all of which received five stars, but were eclipsed by the XC60's performance.

Euro NCAP says this makes it the best all-round performer of the year and puts the XC60 on a par with its larger sibling, the Volvo XC90.

Tallying 37.25 out of 38 overall points in the "Adult Occupant Protection" category, the Swedish model achieved ideal scores in the side impact at 50km/h (eight out of eight) and oblique pole at 32km/h (eight out of eight) crash tests, as well as for its city autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system (three out of three).

The Volvo's rating was helped with by a number of driver-assistance features that give the auto the performance of a larger model.

Similarly, the frontal offset at 64km/h crash test returned a 7.82 out of eight, with points deducted for "acceptable" protection of the driver's lower legs, while all other body parts - including the front passenger's - had "good" protection. But it is the high-selling mass-market vehicles that will really influence road safety in the future and manufacturers like Nissan, Ford, Seat and VW are to be congratulated for democratising safety by making high-tech safety assistance available on their superminis.

The XC60 comes with AEB as standard on all variant grades, working at high and low speeds with pedestrian detection. Both models can also be specified with AEB as an optional extra.
