Pakistan Spinner Saeed Ajmal Announces Retirement

"I am quitting all forms of cricket after the current National Twenty20 tournament", Ajmal told AFP from Rawalpindi on the phone.

Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has made a decision to retire from all forms of cricket after the National T20 Competition which is now underway. He had famously claimed 24 wickets in three Test matches. "I am thankful to all my fellow players, mostly to Misbah-ul-Haq for his confidence in me, and all my friends and family", the spinner said.

Having claimed 178 wickets in 35 Tests, Ajmal said: "It was a highly satisfying career in which I achieved whatever goals I set for myself and helped the team win matches".

It was only recently announced that Ajmal would feature in the Islamabad United camp playing the role of spin bowling coach. He was equally important in the white-ball formats, an important part of successful sides until 2011, and nearly a solitary burden-bearer in the less successful sides thereafter.

Ajmal feels that he is running out of time to go out on his own terms and admitted that the tail-end of his career was frustrating.

Ajmal made his global debut for Pakistan in 2008 and went on to pick 447 wickets in all formats of the game.

At the time he was the No. 1 ranked ODI bowler and was in the top 10 list in both Tests and T20Is. At that point, nobody had taken more global wickets than him in the preceding three-year period.

With Yasir Shah finding a regular place in the national team and several other younger bowlers in limited-overs, Ajmal's future at the highest level has looked bleak.

He was able to remodel his action and return but he was never the force that he had been. He was first pulled up during the 2008 Asia Cup but was cleared soon after.
