Odds slashed on the next Sunderland boss as new favourite emerges

The Rangers legend is one of a number of names who have been linked with the job at the Stadium of Light, with the Black Cats being without a permanent boss since sacking Simon Grayson at the end of October.

Coleman is believed to be giving serious consideration to ending his time at the helm of Wales after he failed to take the Red Dragons to their first World Cup since the 1958 tournament in Sweden.

The Championship outfit have undergone a painstaking search over the past three weeks as they look to appoint the right man to lead them out of the bottom of the league table and into the upper echelons of England's second division.

Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Jonathan Ford added fuel to talk that Coleman will become Sunderland boss by confirming the 47-year-old's intention to return to club management.

An FAW statement read: "Regretfully, Chris Coleman has resigned from his position as Wales National Team Manager with immediate effect".

"We wish Chris the very best of luck for the future as he returns to club management, a desire for which he has always been honest and open about".

Coleman began his managerial career at Fulham, spending four years in charge of the Whites before a poor run of form saw him axed by Mohamed Al Fayed. However, he was unable to build on the momentum from their successful France 2016 campaign and qualify the team for next summer's 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

Coleman took his first job when 33, managing Fulham after retiring early due to injury. Robbie Stockdale will remain in charge in a caretaker capacity for Saturday's home game against Millwall, with Coleman set to be in the dugout for the first time on Tuesday night, when Sunderland travel to Aston Villa.
