North East Police launch a two week gun surrender

The two week campaign started on Monday, members of the public will be encouraged to surrender any firearms in their possession to the police.

Many firearms are "held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality" and are often left forgotten in people's homes, according to the National Ballistic Intelligence Service (Nabis), which is co-ordinating the surrender. However others are acquired and distributed by criminal networks to threaten or harm their local communities.

Residents should make sure that the firearm is unloaded and covered up, and if possible people are asked to ring the police beforehand on 101 to let officers know that they are bringing a gun in as part of the operation.

Michelle Mounsey, Firearms and Explosives Licensing Manager for the Devon & Cornwall Police and Dorset Police Alliance, said: "We want to take out of circulation any type of firearm and ammunition, which includes guns which can still be fired, antique or unwanted collectible weapons, replica weapons, air weapons, BB guns, stun guns and ammunition that are no longer required".

Anyone handing in firearms or ammunition during the surrender period is advised to check the opening times of their nearest participating police enquiry office.

National Police Chiefs' Council Lead for Criminal Use of Firearms, Assistant Chief Constable Helen McMillan, said: "I am urging anyone with an unwanted firearm to hand it over to police".

Cmdr. Gyeford said this was a gun surrender, and not an amnesty, and the weapons which were handed in would be forensically tested to see if they had been used in any crimes and individuals would be prosecuted if they were linked to shootings. "Each firearm we retrieve has the potential to save a life, so do the right thing and surrender your weapon".

"This initiative gives people the opportunity to dispose of any unwanted or unused firearms safely and anonymously, whether they are held lawfully or unlawfully".

Mookie Betts will never know how it feels to pitch a flawless game, but he knows what it's like to bowl one. Betts, 25, hit.264 with 24 home runs and 102 RBI this season to make his second consecutive All-Star team.

Nottinghamshire Police have launched a two-week "surrender period" for illegally-held guns and ammunition.

. "The sooner you hand them in over the next fortnight, the better".

A proportion of the firearms will be destroyed but some may be retained by NABIS or museums if they are of significant interest or unusual.

Detective Chief Insp Rayland added: "I'd like to clarify that this is a firearms surrender and not a general firearms amnesty for the lifetime of the firearm; an amnesty will be granted for police possession of an item only at the point of handover (surrender)".

Superintendent Julian Platt from Lancashire Constabulary, said: "Our aim is to keep Lancashire safe which we will do by working with partners and our local communities to prevent and detect crime. We take all reports of incidents involving firearms extremely seriously and robust action will be taken against anyone who commits a firearms related offence".

When and where can I hand in firearms?

In Caerphilly County Borough, firearms and ammunition can be handed in at police stations in Blackwood (open daily between 8am and 8pm), Caerphilly town (between Monday and Friday 9am to 5pm), and Ystrad Mynach (Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm).

More information is available on the Northumbria Police website along with the list of designated stations and FAQs.
