N Korea brands Trump 'warmonger' as his Asia tour moves to Hanoi

The exercise is taking place while U.S. President Donald Trump is on an Asian tour and presenting a united front with regional leaders.

In the first comments on the U.S. leader's visit by a North Korean official, a Pyongyang foreign ministry spokesman said it was a "warmonger's visit for confrontation to rid the DPRK of its self-defensive nuclear deterrence", according to the state-run KCNA news agency. Following his "lunatic remarks" made in September, Trump "made his conceived attempt yet again to alienate our people from the government and keep up rivalry between the DPRK and the worldwide society", the spokesman continued. The North Korean spokesman, though, said nothing would strop Pyongyang from pursuing its nuclear weapons program.

Trump continued his tough talk against Pyongyang on Friday in a speech to business leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Danang, Vietnam, saying that the region's future "must not be held hostage to a dictator's twisted fantasies of violent conquest and nuclear blackmail", referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The paper denounced the US president's Asia trip as "a warmonger's trip for confrontation with the North", "an old miser's trip to sell arms", and "a chief terrorist's trip for self-destruction".

In a fresh show of force, three USA aircraft carriers, accompanied by South Korean warships, launched a joint naval drill yesterday.

The three flattops - USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt - entered the South's military operation zone, called the Korea Theater of Operations (KTO), for the four-day maneuvers slated to end Tuesday.

The exercises will also involve 11 U.S. Aegis ships and seven South Korean naval vessels, including two Aegis ships.

In addition, the two leaders also agreed to resolve North Korea-related tensions peacefully after a summit meeting. The leaders have agreed to hold a bilateral summit on the sidelines of the APEC forum, scheduled to end Saturday.

United States officials have already warned that North Korea are continuing to develop their missiles, rocket fuels and engines as well as targeting and guidance systems.

Trump had warned North Korea on Wednesday not to underestimate the United States as he wrapped up his visit to South Korea.

According to the U.S. Navy, it is the first three-carrier exercise in the Western Pacific since 2007.
