Korean Navy, 3 US Carriers to Conduct Joint Drill

U.S. warships USS Nimitz, the Ronald Reagan, the Theodore Roosevelt including South Korean naval vessels were involved in the exercise amid tensions in North Korea.

The combined strike force is conducting sea surveillance, UNREPS, air defense drills and air combat training and close-in coordinated maneuvers, among other operations.

The Nimitz' flight deck was a hive of activity Monday as crewmembers readied steam catapults that would send 23-ton F/A-18E and 18F Super Hornets soaring skyward.

"Multiple carrier strike force operations are very complex, and this exercise in the Western Pacific is a strong testament to the US Pacific Fleet's unique ability and ironclad commitment to the continued security and stability of the region", said Admiral Scott Swift, the commander of the US Pacific Fleet. The USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group, including a cruiser and three destroyers, entered the Western Pacific region on October 23, joining the USS Ronald Reagan, Bloomberg said.

The carriers are required to meet up in the Sea of Japan during the week off the Korean Peninsula, according to a USA defense official.

Recently, the US Naval force aircraft carriers have organized three "double strike group" operations in the Western Pacific which took place in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and the Philippine Sea.

It marks the first time that three USA aircraft carriers conduct joint exercises with South Korea's Navy.

Following the bilateral JMSDF-US Navy exercise, the carriers strike groups linked up with seven Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) warships including two Aegis guided missile destroyers for war games meant to deter North Korea.

The training is expected to showcase the military strength and United States alliance with Japan and South Korea amid the ongoing conflict with North Korea, according to information obtained by Association Press.

However, Pyongyangs state news agency accused the US and South Korea of attempting to escalate tensions in the region.
