Jimmy Fallon Pays Tribute to His Mother, Gloria, on The Tonight Show

Jimmy canceled a taping of "The Tonight Show" that Friday to be by her side, and then canceled last week's tapings to make arrangements.

Tonight Show writer and producer Mike DiCenzo shared some background about Swift's last-minute performance and thanked the singer for her thoughtfulness.

We do think that it is especially worth noting that Fallon didn't open the show with the tribute to his mother - instead, he performed a pretty standard monologue for him before sitting down at the desk and choosing that moment to pour out his heart.

Fallon ended by saying, "Mom, I will never stop trying to make you laugh".

"Last week, I was in the hospital and I grabbed her hand and squeezed, 'I love you, '" Fallon said with tears in his eyes.

The American star also explained how one of his most cherished childhood memories convinced him that his mother was in "trouble" when he visited her in hospital.

On Tuesday morning, Stewart talked about that incident on Today , saying that he had been caught off guard by Ackerman's question. I'm not that connected to that world.

Taylor's appearance was the first performance on the show since Jimmy returned following the passing of his mother.

"[Taylor] was not scheduled to do our show today", he wrote. She said yes with zero hesitation.

Dressed in a shiny silver hoodie and black jeans, Swift played the piano as she sang the heartfelt song and was accompanied by just an acoustic guitar.

The lyrics, "you squeeze my hand three times in the back of the cab", appeared to particularly affect Fallon, who recalled his late mother's special signal for showing their love. "We all lost it", DiCenzo tweeted.

"By the way, you guys gave my mom the greatest gift ever by employing me on the Today show, so she could watch me every single morning in her kitchen and I know that she did", he added.

He concluded: "That hug between Jimmy and Taylor after the song was 100% real emotion".
