Hate crimes on the rise in USA, reveals Federal Bureau of Investigation data

Hate crimes targeting Arabs rose by about 38 percent, while crimes targeting whites and Latinos rose by about 17 percent and 15 percent respectively.

In 2016, 6,121 hate crime incidents were reported -an increase of five percent from 2015. In 2015, hate crimes increased by seven percent.

The FBI has reported an increase in hate crimes in the U.S. for a second consecutive year, with Hindus and Sikhs among those targeted in the more than 6,000 incidents of crimes motivated by biases towards religions, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

One such murder victim was transgender 16-year-old Kedarie Johnson, who was shot and killed in March of 2016 in what prosecutors have labeled a hate crime.

Among the racially-motivated crimes, over one-half were directed at members of the African-American community.

The average rate was 3.3 per 100,000 residents past year.

About 3 percent resulted from anti-Asian bias, while almost four percent of victims were American Indian or Alaska Native.

The FBI says it collects this information so as to better understand and combat hate crimes across the nation.
