Green Beret discovered SEALs' illicit cash. Then he was killed

An embezzlement scheme provided the motive behind the killing of a U.S. Green Beret sergeant at the hands of two Navy SEALs in Mali earlier this year, the Daily Beast reported late Sunday.

But according to an explosive new report published Sunday night, the truth may be far more complicated than the Department of Defense first suspected. The Daily Beast reports, citing several members of the USA special operations community, that Melgar was killed by two members of SEAL Team Six after he discovered that the two SEALs were skimming cash off the top of the slush fund the elite special operators generally used to cultivate intelligence sources as part of the DoD's broader counterterrorism mission in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin region. The SEALs reportedly offered to cut Melgar in on the deal, but he refused, allegedly eventually leading to a confrontation that left him dead.

Shortly before his death, Melgar told his wife, Michelle, that he had a bad feeling about the two SEALs on the operation with him, according to an official, who spoke to The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity.

Navy SEAL Tony DeDolph, 38, initially told investigators that he was wrestling with Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar in Melgar's room at 4 a.m. when fellow SEAL Adamcranston Matthews entered the room. No charges have yet been filed. The SEALs and another Green Beret took Melgar to hospital, the Beast quotes former AFRICOM officials as saying. Further, the Beast details what Melgar reportedly discovered about the men who are now under suspicion in his death.

The Navy Criminal Investigative Service referred questions to the Navy's Special Warfare Development Group in Virginia Beach, the home base of the two SEALs, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Add this to the Beast's report about illicit cash discovery, and the probe into Melgar's death has grown even more tangled. Gen. Donald Bolduc, then commander of Special Operations Command-Africa, was suspicious of the two SEALs' story from the start. She also gave investigators the emails her husband sent her about the problems he was having with the two SEALs.

Lord Of The Rings to be made into TV series
The franchise includes The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003), as well as 2013 prequel The Hobbit .

They told superiors that Melgar was drunk during hand-to-hand fighting exercises known as "combatives".

He graduated from Texas Tech in 2006, and enlisted in the Army in 2012 as an off-the-street Special Forces recruit.

Melgar, who was from Lubbock, Texas, was just 34 years old when he died, and served two tours in Afghanistan.

"Staff Sgt. Melgar did what most only dream of and excelled at every turn!" "He is missed dearly every single day, but his legacy lives on".
