About two weeks ago, there were rumours going around that Warner Bros would be making a TV series in the Lord of the Rings franchise, which left fans in a frenzy.

The deal involves a multi-season commitment and also a potential spin-off.

13, the streaming service announced that it had acquired the global rights to a multi-season Lord of the Rings television series in a deal that is reportedly close to $250 million.

The TV adaptation will cover different ground, focusing on "previously unexplored stories based on Tolkien's original writings", Mr Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said in a statement.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy has 17 Oscars in total, 11 of which come from the third and final film, The Return of the King, which is tied with Titanic and Ben-Hur for most Academy Awards ever for a single film.

The estate, HarperCollins and the films' distributor New Line Cinema will help Amazon produce the television series.
