Canada's Trudeau says he raised human rights, killings with Philippines' Duterte

The PMO says Trudeau is the first Canadian prime minister to be invited to participate in the annual East Asia Summit.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised the issue of human rights and extrajudicial killings during his brief conversation with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday, November 14.

Duterte also threatened to ban at least 2 United States lawmakers from entering the Philippines after they raised concerns about possible human rights violations committed under his drug war.

Trudeau said he brought up the issue of human rights to Duterte, who was "receptive" to his comments.

While Trudeau said Duterte was "receptive" to his comments, the Philippine leader reiterated his warning to foreign leaders to "lay off" the issue.

"Canada has earned a reputation for being able to have a strong, sometimes frank, sometimes firm discussions on rule of law and human rights with parters around the world".

"Countries around the world know that when you engage with Canada you will hear about human-rights concerns and we are the first to mention that we are not flawless, either".

Stalker kills girl by setting her on fire in Chennai
According to the police, the incident took place in Adambakkam area of Chennai on Monday at around 8.45 pm, reported CNN-News18 . A stalker on Monday night killed a girl, whom he obsessed, by setting her on fire and severely injured her mother and sister.

However, Duterte had a different account, emphasising that he was only accountable to Filipinos who elected him as president. "It is a personal and official insult", Duterte said.

"When you are a foreigner, you don't know what exactly is happening in this country", he added.

Duterte has said all such killings are legal acts of self-defence by police - or have been carried out by "vigilantes" with no ties to the president - and he has vowed to continue the anti-drug campaign until the end of his presidential term in 2022.

On Monday, the White House said human rights was also discussed in Duterte's talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said human rights came up "briefly" in the context of the Philippines' fight against illegal drugs.

"There was no mention of human rights". The Philippine National Police has also said there has been no extra-judicial killing under the Duterte administration.

Human right is a topic often avoided in meetings by ASEAN, which has followed the principle of non-interference in members' domestic affairs.

Justin Trudeau is continuing his visit to the Philippines where he's trying to raise Canada's profile in the Asia-Pacific region, especially on security and trade issues.
