One of Bill Gates" firms have invested $80 million into nearly 25,000 acres of land, west of Phoenix in Arizona to build a "smart city'. According to Belmont Partners, a real estate investment group based in Arizona, the goal is to turn the land into its own "smart city".

Belmont, Arizona, which will house around 160,000 people in 80,000 homes, will embrace "cutting-edge technology" throughout the city, which is to be built on a desert area now occupied by just a few dozen people.

Now an undeveloped patch of desert 45 minutes west of Phoenix, the future of Belmont might hinge on old-fashioned infrastructure.

There will be space for 80,000 residential units for a projected population of 182,000.

Technology billionaire Bill Gates is to build the world's first objective built smart city - with driverless cars and state of the art connectivity.

The cofounder of the Microsoft Corporation plans to name the master-planned city Belmont, and "will transform a raw, blank slate into a purpose-built edge city built around a flexible infrastructure model", say Belmont Partners in their announcement. The initial plan calls for 3,800 of the 24,800 acres to be devoted to office, commercial, and retail space. "Belmont illustrates that Arizona remains at the leading edge of trends in American urban planning and development keying off of advances in solar power and electric distribution systems, autonomous auto testing, broadband and data centres". The proposed I-11 freeway that would pass through Belmont and connect to Las Vegas makes the land an ideal spot for the new community. The city would be having eight thousand homes and the remaining land of three thousand and four hundred acres would be open land. Only time will tell if Gates' city will be an inclusive, holistically planned community, or just a test ground for Microsoft products.

In an interview with KPNX, Ronald Schott, executive emeritus at the Arizona Technology Council, applauded the decision by Belmont Partners and Gates to create the project in Tonopah.

Paul Babeu, former sheriff of Arizona's Pinal County, tweeted: "The Jetsons come to Arizona".

"Finally, Arizona's getting recognised for being a place for innovation".
