Bill Gates Commits $100 Million for Alzheimer's Fund and Startups

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, speaks at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum in New York City, U.S., September 20.

Even though there has been decades of scientific research on Alzheimer's, there's no treatment to slow the progression of the disease.

Of Mr. Gates' personal contribution, $50 million will go to the Dementia Discovery Fund, a partnership between charity, pharmaceutical companies and governments working to advance Alzheimer's research. This will not only speed up the progress we make towards finding a cure, but his attention to the cause will also help to eliminate the negative stigma that still exists around dementia to help create a better world for the 50 million people globally who are living with the condition today.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has a long track record of supporting research to eradicate diseases like malaria and polio.

"This fact-that people are living longer than ever before-should always be a wonderful thing", Gates said on his blog.

Gates announced the move on his blog, where he explained his personal reasons for joining the effort on tackling Alzheimer's disease. Gates cites a family history with the disease.

The incident comes days after a Pakistani soldier was killed in a similar attack on a check post at the border in Rajgal Valley. Pakistani troops "effectively" retaliated and killed up to 10 "fleeing terrorists", the statement claimed.

Gates says that he is hoping to fund innovative ideas for treatments that aren't now being tested by the pharmaceutical industry.

Bill Gates tells that the treatment for each and every disease are much advanced this time and can provide a long-term cure for every individual.

The philanthropist, whose usual focus is on infectious diseases in poorer countries, said Alzheimer's caught his interest partly for personal reasons, and partly because it has so far proved such a tough nut to crack.

Alzheimer's disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Alzheimer's Association. I know how very bad it is to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity, and there is nothing you can do about it. This is something I know a lot about, because men in my family have suffered from Alzheimer's. His latest $100 million gift is going in two equal chunks to organizations on the cutting edge of fighting dementia.

Through talking to experts in the field over the past year, Gates said he had identified five areas of need: Understanding better how Alzheimer's unfolds, detecting and diagnosing it earlier, pursuing multiple approaches to trying to halt the disease, making it easier for people to take part in clinical trials of potential new medicines, and using data better.
