2 militants killed in Handwara encounter

Two militants were killed, while a policeman was injured on Monday evening in a shootout in Handwara area in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. Official sources told UNI that militants attacked a police party at Kajwar, Handwara in Kupwara. "So far, there has been no confirmation about the presence of militants", the police added. The identity and group affiliation of the slain terrorists is being ascertained, a police official said. Meanwhile, a search operation has been launched in the area.

Sources said that almost 70 security personnel have lost their lives in the line of duty this year, while an equal number of ultras have infiltrated into Kashmir in the past 10 months.

The four victims were identified as Doreal Rogers, 20, Alesia Maddox, 20, Armonie Maddox, 18 and Ervin Johnson 18. The only survivor of the crash was a toddler who was buckled into a child seat and suffered minor injuries.

The BSF man was on leave at his home and killed in gun and knife attack of militants on September 28.

On November 6, an army jawan and three militants were killed in an encounter in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. They caution him against acting as an "informer" of police and working for mainstream parties.
