Southwest Airlines announces plans to fly to Hawaii

"Hawaii is an important place for Southwest Airlines because so many people count on us to take them everywhere they want to go reliably and affordably".

Southwest will begin a process to obtain approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for Extended Operations, a regulatory requirement to operate between the mainland and the Hawaiian Islands.

Southwest, which flies the most domestic USA customers of any airline, has applied with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for Extended Operations Service authorization, a required regulatory step ahead of commencing flights between the continental US and Hawaii.

Seeking Alpha predicted that Southwest "could easily add at least 10 daily flights to Hawaii, to start with".

That statement is probably a reference to something called the Southwest Effect - a concept introduced in the 1990s in a Transportation Department analysis of domestic airline competition. The Max can fly farther and is more fuel efficient than Southwest's older model Boeing 737-700s and 737-800s.

Other airlines have also said in recent months they will add new Hawaii flights.

The airline did not announce details of what routes would be served. "You can anticipate there will be ample connectivity to our Hawaii routes based on the number of flights between Las Vegas and California". However, passengers could be able to get connecting service from western Southwest hubs like Denver and Los Angeles.

The company made the announcement Wednesday in a reply to a tweet from 2008.

Dallas-based Southwest will start selling tickets to the popular vacation destination in 2018. Travelers have wanted Southwest to offer flights to Hawaii for years, and Kelly said it's one of the top questions from employees.
