Scientists Claim We Remain Conscious After We Die

They set out to find the answer in a much less unsafe fashion, looking at studies in Europe and the USA on people who have suffered a cardiac arrest and "come back to life".

Death just became even more scary: scientists say people are aware they're dead because their consciousness continues to work after the body has stopped showing signs of life, reported The Independent.

NYU Langone School of Medicine researchers led by Dr. Sam Parnia are behind this study.

"They'll describe watching doctors and nurses working; they'll describe having awareness of full conversations, of visual things that were going on, that would otherwise not be known to them", he explained.

These accounts were then verified by the medical and nursing staff who were present at the time. It's the largest study of its type ever carried out.

The team will observe the brain in details during the course of a cardiac arrest, revival, and death to know the amount of oxygen is needed to reach the brain, when the cortex comes "back online", and how to relate these experiences to the activity of the brain itself.

Parnia and his team are using these accounts from people who've been "brought back" to learn more about a odd phenomena that takes place in the brain at the time of death.

If I try to put him on the pitch without good fitness, I risk another injury. "It is true we are not in our best moment". N'Golo has started to work, not with the group, but to get himself fit.

The moment the heart stops beating is typically used by doctors to define the moment of death, according to Sam Parnia, a doctor at New York University.

As per the definition of the paper, death is a stage where the heart stops functioning when the heart stops pumping blood and stops beating.

The bloody supply to the brain is then cut off and its functions stop, with brain waves stopping at between two and 20 seconds after this. About 40 percent said they experienced an awareness while their hearts had stopped.

You might remember the 1990 thriller Flatliners, in which medical students try to find out if there's life after death by stopping their own hearts. Still, sometimes it takes a while for those cells to truly die, and during that time, you might be at least somewhat aware of what's going on.

Studies at the University of MI have shown that there is a sudden burst of brain activity when the body dies.

But scientists have increasingly attributed these out of body experiences to physiological processes and it is believed they are as a result of unusual brain activity caused by reduced blood flow to the brain.

"In the same way that a group of researchers might be studying the qualitative nature of the human experience of 'love.'" Parnia said.
