Rishard Matthews Would Rather Quit Than Be Forced To Stand

For the past two Titans' games, the veteran wideout has remained in the team's locker room during the anthem.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews said on Twitter that if a new rule is enforced, he's calling it quits.

He tweeted, "No I will be done playing football".

Matthews, who hit the field for the Titans' Thursday afternoon practice, quickly deleted the tweet.

In recent weeks, players have refused to stand during the anthem to protest racial inequality.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell previously announced that league owners will meet next week to address player protests, which is something President Donald Trump has implored the league to do for over a month. Matthews previously refrained from protesting in respect of his brother, but after Trump's comments, he said his brother would understand his intentions going forward. The Titans receiver has spoken out about how the National Football League protests have been hijacked by people focusing on the disrespecting the flag narrative.

Since President Trump's September 23 criticism of NFL players' national anthem protests, Matthews has vowed to continue kneeling until the President apologizes. "If guys wanna have, I guess you would call it, a peaceful protest, I don't think it's right to take that away".

Shortly after Kaepernick began to protest during the anthem, Matthews publicly criticized his former college quarterback, in part because of his brother.

"Having a brother (lose his life overseas) and growing up military, at first I looked at it as a disrespect thing to the military", Matthews told the Tennessean. 'Just shows you we still have a long way to go in this country, but I believe in this country and we'll eventually get it corrected. "You have that right, that freedom of speech, and you're not allowing that to happen".
