Qualcomm fined $773 million by Taiwan trade commission

Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission has slapped smartphone chipset and modem manufacturer Qualcomm with a fine of $774 million for allegedly taking advantage of its monopoly in the industry.

In addition to its whopping, multi-million dollar judgment, Taiwan's FTC ruled that Qualcomm must also remove any terms - including names, numbers, shipping quantities and/or pricing details - from its products that are pertinent to previous licensing agreements.

Qualcomm, not surprisingly, disagrees with the decision. In 2015, a Chinese regulator imposed a $972 million fine to Qualcomm, followed by a $853 fine in South Korea a year ago. The fine has "no rational relationship" to Qualcomm's actual revenues in Taiwan, the company said.

Prison employees hurt in attempted prison break; 'nobody escaped'
The high-security all male prison holds 896 inmates, and has a staff size of 410 employees, according to the prison's website. An attempted prison break in North Carolina has left several workers injured as fires broke out inside the facility.

WIPR reported last month that Qualcomm had revealed plans to appeal against a Seoul High Court ruling that denied Qualcomm's request to stay an order issued against it by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC). Apple essentially accused Qualcomm of extortion, alleging that the company withheld $1 billion in back payments for cooperating with law enforcement agencies. Qualcomm is also under investigation by the US FTC, which could potentially lead to another expensive fine. Those regulatory challenges are playing out as Apple is waging a global legal battle on Qualcomm's long-held practice of charging a percentage of the total price of iPhones and other Apple devices as a licensing fee for its patents. Qualcomm has fired back, saying that some iPhones infringe on its patents and has asked US regulators to ban the import of some iPhones into the country, a move that has drawn the ire of some in the industry.

Qualcomm and Apple each followed up with their own array of claims and damning accusations, including subsequent anti-trust lawsuits filed in Beijing, China, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.
