Nokia halts Ozo camera development; plans to cut jobs

While it might not have been in the company's original ballpark, OZO suggested Nokia was taking VR seriously. The company halted development of future models of the camera in favor of further investment into digital health technology.

Now the unit in question employees 1,090 people, with the job cuts likely to affect staff in Finland, the USA and Britain.

The news comes on the eve of the Oculus Connect VR developers conference, which opens Wednesday in San Jose.

The VR-enabled camera was sold at United States dollars 45,000, although the original price was quoted as USD 60,000.

Targeted at professional VR content creators, the OZO camera, which debuted in December 2015 for $60,000, captures stereoscopic 3D video and spacial audio through eight synchronized shutter sensors and integrated microphones.

In August 2016, Nokia slashed the price of the OZO by $15,000 in a move the company said it hoped would "drive penetration globally". The figure represents around a third of the Nokia Technologies workforce.

Staff in Finland, the U.S. and the United Kingdom are set to be affected, according to a statement.

Nokia announced that it is refocusing Nokia Technologies to maximize its investment in digital health technology.

After opting to target VR creation over making a VR headset, the company has decided that it's going to instead focus on health products fuelled by its Withings acquisition as well as patent licensing with 310 people set to lose their jobs.

Nokia today announced plans to sharpen the focus of Nokia Technologies on digital health, and accelerate growth in that market, while optimizing investments in virtual reality (VR). "To start the process, Nokia invited employee representatives of Nokia Technologies in Finland to cooperation negotiations", said Gregory Lee, president of Nokia Technologies.

The news comes less than a month after Nokia said it planned to cut nearly 600 jobs in France.
