Gymnast McKayla Maroney says she was molested by Dr. Nassar

Inspired to speak out by the burgeoning #MeToo movement, former Olympic gold medallist McKayla Maroney announced on Twitter that she had been molested by Larry Nassar, who pleaded guilty to federal child-pornography charges in June and has been accused by more than 100 women and girls of sexual assault during his time as U.S. gymnastics' team doctor.

In a Twitter post published early Wednesday morning, Maroney detailed years of alleged sexual abuse she says endured at the hands of Nassar.

Nassar was the team doctor for USA Gymnastics from 1996 to 2015. Maroney said that she was told she was "receiving 'medically necessary treatment that he had been performing on patients for over 30 years.'" Maroney also voiced the need for change regarding how we treat sexual assault victims, while saying that victims of sexual assault should feel safe accusing their abusers. At those Olympics, she won a team gold medal and a silver in the individual vault.

Maroney wrote that Nassar sexually abused her twice while competing in the Summer 2012 Olympics, once before she won the gold medal and once before she won the silver. "He'd given me a sleeping pill for the flight, and the next thing I know, I was all alone with him in his hotel room getting a 'treatment, '" she said.

USA Gymnastics praised Maroney's strength in a statement on Wednesday, adding it is "outraged and disgusted" by Nassar's alleged conduct. He also worked at the school of osteopathic medicine at Michigan State University (MSU), where he treated the school's gymnasts and other athletes.

Nassar, 53, has been charged with sexual conduct with minors in the state of MI, where he practiced, and is named in hundreds of lawsuits filed by athletes who say he abused them under the pretense of giving them medical treatment.

We can't get away from it. "Part of our work with the teams is to work on and develop all parts of global football", Cooper said. We are looking forward to go to Goa. "I am not surprised either by the fight or the football Japan played.

He pleaded guilty in July to receipt of child pornography, possession of child pornography and destruction and concealment of records.

According to ESPN, Nassar is facing charges in a MI court in a case in which two women alleged he "digitally penetrated them during medical exams" for his own sexual pleasure.

In the past, Nassar and his attorneys have defended the intra-vaginal and intra-rectal procedures as accepted medical practice.

"It didn't end until I left the sport", Maroney said. He could face more than 25 years in jail. "Wherever there is a position of power, there seems to be potential for abuse", Maroney said.

Maroney suggested several options to help stop sexual abuse. "I thought I was going to die that night". In custody since December 2016, he could get 22 to 27 years in prison. Part of Stark's mandate is educating members on rules, educational programs, reporting and adjudication services.

In bravely revealing her story, Maroney seems prepared to be the answer to some of her own questions. A replacement has not been named.
