Facebook's food delivery feature now brings Five Guys to all

Facebook's food delivery feature now brings Five Guys to all

Beginning today, October 13, you can use the official Facebook app to order food.

Today Facebook announced a new feature that will surely send a chill down the spines of executives at Seamless and Caviar.

Facebook wants to develop itself as a one-stop solution for nearly all you need.

Now adding the Facebook Order Food option can surely be seen as an effort by the company to expand its presence in the restaurant industry.

Facebook said it has been testing the food-ordering function over the past year, and rolled the function out to the entire U.S. Friday. You'll have to sign up for the delivery service if you haven't used it before, but it doesn't mean you have to leave the Facebook app.

The Syrian civil war has claimed more than 400,000 lives since it started in 2011, and displaced more than 5 million people.

The company is partnering with several established food delivery services including Delivery.com and DoorDash. Facebook's two-billion strong users get hungry, and before ordering food users will need to jump ship to another app.

It's yet another play by Facebook to monopolise user's time, bringing content traditionally found on the wider web beneath its own umbrella - just like it's already done with Instant Articles. According to a press release, you can only order from restaurants that are already offering takeout and delivery through one of those services.

Right now, Facebook has partnered with a variety of restaurants.

Notably, the feature is only available in the United States for now, but Himel notes Facebook has been working on the feature since 2016. The value for Facebook is obvious; the company hopes you'll fill your craving and then keep swiping through your news feed with your greasy fingers. Recently, Amazon partnered with Olo, which offers order and pay technology across USA locations.
