Facebook supports full disclosure on Russia-backed ads: Sandberg

Facebook has admitted it shouldn't have allowed fake Russian accounts to fund ads supporting Trump in the United States election and will do everything in its power to help authorities get to the bottom of the alleged election interference campaign. She said Facebook hopes to "set a new standard in transparency in advertising".

While Facebook's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, now favors the release, she didn't say Thursday when the company would do so.

"Things happened on our platform in this election that should not have happened", Sandberg said. Facebook later disclosed that information to Congress, which is investigating Russian meddling in the election. But the committees have so far seen no need to issue subpoenas for the data, the sources added.

The companies must figure out how much responsibility to take and how much change to promise, without succumbing to costly regulation or setting a precedent that might be hard to follow in other countries.

Also it is reported that Ms. Sandberg said the ads, pages they link to, and who they were targeted at, have been given to investigators.

Business Insider said Britain was already considering regulations that would treat Facebook more like a media company.

She said the company had been too permissive at times in terms of how advertisers are allowed to target users, and that Facebook did not want to allow ads that may be "discriminatory". "We'll continue to provide information".

Kenya Bans Street Protests Amid Election Row
But in an interview in London, Odinga told the AP he's willing to return if that changes. No candidate aside from Odinga and Kenyatta received even 1 percent of the vote.

A Twitter spokesperson did not respond to an email requesting comment. Mr Schiff noted that it is unlikely that the ads will be released before tech executives testify before Congress in November. "Not just an apology, but determination for our role in enabling Russian interference during the election", she said.

"We expect to have the three largest platforms there", said Conaway. Trump has denied any such collusion.

Facebook said it believed the messages were likely bought by people in Russian Federation before and after the 2016 election.

Although it acknowledged it's still not where it needs to be, Facebook said it has made some improvements in diversifying its workforce.

The sources said investigators think the paid messaging was generated by a group called the Internet Research Agency in St. Petersburg.

The Trump campaign used Cambridge Analytica, a firm backed by Trump supporter Robert Mercer, which blended its own database of information on American voters with Facebook to find swing voters or discourage people from voting at all.
