Facebook Instant Article Subscriptions Being Tested On Android

Facebook is testing the subscription sales system with a number of publisher partners, including Hearst, Tronc, The Economist, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe and The Telegraph in the United Kingdom, as well as other big European newspapers and magazines, such as Bild, Spiegel and Le Parisien.

This is what paywalls will look like in Facebook's Instant Articles.

"This is a direct result of the work we're doing through the Facebook Journalism Project". The subscriptions will then also include access to the publisher's full site, and existing subscribers can also authenticate within Instant Articles so they can get full access without paying twice.

Over the next few weeks, Android users who are browsing news on the Facebook app may encounter a paywall prompting them to subscribe for full access to a publisher's content, Facebook Head of News Partnerships Campbell Brown, Head of News Product Alex Hardiman, and Product Manager Sameera Salari wrote in a blog post.

The second option basically gives publications free reign as to which articles are free and which are paid.

The Foxes also go into the game on a run of three defeats in their last five Premier League games, scoring just five goals. The only win so far came against Brighton.

While the transaction process for subscriptions happens externally, Apple still considers it in-app as Facebook acts as the catalyst for that to happen - thus, it must technically profit from every new subscription.

Facebook will support the subscription-based news product in Instant Articles for both metered models (starting with a uniform meter at 10 articles) and "freemium" models (the publisher controls which articles are locked). Publishers have control over setting the price of subscriptions and owning the subscriber's data.

"Furthermore, we'll be testing other units to help publishers drive additional subscriptions before a person might hit the paywall". "We'll also test a "Subscribe" button that will replace the "Like" button on the top right corner of an article".

Reports back in July suggested that the company was experimenting with Facebook allowing paywalled content. Facebook sort of confirmed that a month later in August, saying it's going to add subscription options on Instant Articles for users to have easier access to more content. According to Recode, Apple declined to be part of this test because it wants its usual cut (as much as 30 percent) of revenue generated through subscriptions. Since Facebook's app is looking to get people to pay directly to view articles, it pretty clearly falls under that umbrella.
