County Votes Could Repeal Beverage Tax By Wednesday

Cook County, which includes Chicago, narrowly approved the tax in November 2016, making the county the most populous area in the United States to collect a special tax on soda, sports drinks and energy drinks. The tax was expected to raise $200 million per year.

The ordinance calls for a penny-an-ounce tax on sugar- and artificially sweetened beverages. The repeal measure still would face a final vote before the board on Wednesday.

After Commissioner John Daley (D-11th) announced he would change positions to support repeal last Thursday, Christopher Provenzano, a spokesman for the repeal bill's sponsor, Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison (R-17th), said three more Democratic commissioners - Jesus Garcia (D-7th), Stanley Moore (D-4th) and Dennis Deer (D-2nd) - said they too would switch positions to vote for repeal.

Corker raises dark concerns about Trump, president hits back
Corker, who is 5 foot 7 inches tall, is not the first political rival to be branded by Trump with the "Liddle" moniker. Bob Corker is apparently still on, based on the new nickname the president bestowed upon Corker Tuesday morning.

Lawrence Suffredin, representing the 13th district, was the lone county commissioner to vote against the repeal. People living near the border of Cook County were willing to drive a short distance to avoid the tax. And I am thankful for the talented professionals at the Cook County Health and Hospitals System who are committed to promoting better health outcomes for residents across the County, especially in our vulnerable communities. "Commissioners were listening and common sense has prevailed".

Cook County, Ill.'s tax on sugary drinks, which impacts Chicago and surrounding areas, could disappear by December 1. "Tax fatigue has set in when we have bottle tax and sales tax and hotel tax and gas tax and bag tax, enough was enough". Pollsters asked the same question in early August, with nearly 87 percent opposing the tax then - a statistically insignificant change.
