Mr Kher wrote on Twitter that he felt "deeply humbled and honoured" to head the iconic institute.

A notification regarding Kher's appointment has been issued, officials said.

However, Anupam's appointment will attract criticism from many quarters.

Anupam Kher who has appeared in over 500 films and has been part of the theatre circles has now been appointed as the new chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), located in Pune.

"I would love to facilitate students rather than setting agenda like an administrator".

In an interview to India TV, he had said, "I am a sycophant of Narendra Modi".

The post remained vacant for at least seven months after Gajendra Chauhan demitted office in March this year, following constant protest by film fraternity and students of the institute.

His appointment was followed by massive protests by FTII students and ex-students and a 139-day strike demanding his removal from the post.

Meanwhile, actors and directors from Bollywood wished Kher on his appointment as the chairman of FTII. Anupam himself said he will give his best to the role. So, I think he will be able to handle it quite nicely.

Prolific Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has been appointed the new chairman of the Film and Television Institute in Pune. Silently enough Kher has also created an worldwide career of some repute and his filmography includes films with a Gurinder Chadda (Bend it Like Beckham [2002]), an Ang Lee (Lust, Caution [2007]) and a David O Russell (Silver Linings Playbook [2012]) besides producing Rituparno Ghosh's Bariwali (2000) and Jhanu Barua's Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005).

He also authored a book "The Best Thing About You Is You". An alumnus of National School of Drama, he has also served as the Chairman of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in the past.

Robin Joy, president of FTII students' association told DNA, "Kher is already running a private acting institute and still government has made a decision to appoint him as the chairman of a government institute".

Kher, who was the recipient of the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution to the field of cinema and arts, has won several national and global awards and recognitions during his career in film industry.

The actor is all for formal training in the craft. The psychodrama established Kher as a force to reckon with and in a short period he went on to become one of the most recognisable faces in Hindi cinema.

Anupam Kher is popularly known for his films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Ram Lakhan, Dil, Tezaab and Beta.
